Gaming’s Top Piss-Offs: The Fall of Rare?!

August 21st, 2008 by Daniel Duncan

Is anyone else tired of hearing this? Everyone is always speaking of the Rare’s “alleged” downfall but I’ve yet to see where they’ve ever fallen? Sure, and I openly admit, that Perfect Dark Zero didn’t live up to expectations. At all. This I believe was due in part to just some really bad decisions made with the game. But one game that still managed to be Rare’s best selling game since their purchase that still isn’t terribly awful, and Rare has fallen and lost their charm? Hardly. Kameo, Grabbed by the Ghoulies and Viva Pinata has shown that they have are from down and out and Viva 2 and Banjo will prove this more.

Eurogamer’s Preview of Rare’s Avatars

August 21st, 2008 by Daniel Duncan

Rare’s created Avatar system will launch with the ‘New Xbox Experience’ Dashboard update sometime this Fall. The Avatars are somewhat similar to the Miis that will allow you to customly create a life-like Avatar that you can dress, change its hairstyles, height and width and much more. Rare even brought in young fashion graduates to ensure the best quality of the experience.

"Although we’ve built them, the source and ideas for the designs come from fashion graduates," Sutherland says. Musgrave elaborates: "We didn’t feel qualified as a bunch of developers to make the decisions ourselves. We thought hard about the best way to do it, and got in a bunch of people who were younger, much trendier, much more interesting in a fashion sense." Just so. "That’s the overriding thing about the whole avatar project: the underlying character represents you in some way, and communicates your personality in some way on Live, so you can change what you wear as easily as you would with a real-world wardrobe." Much more information available exclusively at Eurogamer.

My Deepest, Sincerest Apologies

August 17th, 2008 by Daniel Duncan

I am under the realization that I have let a lot of people that visit this site down. When I started the ‘64 Days of Viva Pinata’ Special, it was my absolute every intent to ensure its completion to help generate a level of hype for Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise and refresh memories of the franchise in general. Unfortunately to myself and to those of you who looked forward to it, it was too much for me to handle alone at a bad time. Because of this, thoughts of resigning have seriously been flowing through my mind as it is really depressing knowing I have let so many of you down in this regard. But I’ve decided to give myself one last chance and straighten up my act.

All of you who visit this site are dear to me and it hurts to when I disappoint you. So I’m going to give this all another shot and get everything back together around here to show all of you and Rare how much I really care. I hope that you all will forgive me and will continue to come here for your Rare news.

IGN Presents the History of Rare

July 28th, 2008 by Banjo-Conker

As the title suggests, the folks at IGN have just completed their own retrospective of everyone’s favorite Twycross-based developer. From the days of Ultimate: Play the Game to their more recent releases on the Xbox 360, it’s a fairly interesting read [for the unfamiliar].

"For most of its history, Rare was the singular vision of two brothers driven by their love of games and need for success. They brought a new philosophy to both game design and production, setting records that are likely to stand for decades to come, and achieved rockstar status while shunning the limelight completely. And on the way, they produced some of the seminal titles in video game history."

Many people are upset and fretting over losing their Xbox 360 Dashboard Themes when the new dashboard receives its overhaul this Fall. Well no need to fret any longer. You will not be losing your themes. They will very much still be in tact and serve as the background of the dashboard, just as they do now. Visual proof of the Viva Pinata theme follows:
