E3 2009: Rare Developing for Project Natal

June 4th, 2009 by hylian1

During Microsoft’s Media Briefing on Monday, Microsoft revealed a controller free, motion controlled camera that is set to revolutionize the future of gaming. It is called Natal. Today, Microsoft’s Shane Kim told Kotaku that “Rare is intimately involved with Project Natal in a number of different dimensions. They’re doing an awful lot of work, even outside the traditional game space, I would say. Unfortunately I can’t go into a lot of detail about that. Rare is alive and well and really having a broader impact on the entire Xbox world than just doing the games they traditionally have in the past.”

What could we ultimately see from Rare in regards to Project Natal? Based upon what I saw at the Media Briefing, it could work astonishingly well for a new Perfect Dark title. Avatar games are bound to come as well.

If Rare could experiment with Project Natal on one of their existing IPs, which would you choose? What would you not choose? Tell us what you think in the comments!

I think that Microsoft is pushing Rare to make games that could really captivate different kind of gamers. We all know Nintendo Wii opened games to people who never played before. With Project Natal Microsoft has the opportunity to bring something different, original and more intuitive, and Rare has the “duty” to show what we can actually do with it. I expect some games to be intended for casual gamers (introducing new IPs) and, on the other hand, I hope they satisfy hardcore gamers showing old IPs under the new light of Natal.

I predict: Perfect Dark 2! Change equipment and weapons simply by naming them (example: P9P, silencer, flashlight), cover behind walls and objects simulating the moves seen in PDZ, talk with other NPC (example: talk to Carrington for briefs on missions, or lure an enemy whistling and then sneaking away), actually perform melee attack and resolve mini-games like those of PDZ. This is the minimum Rare can do with new no-controller. :D
